CAVALCATA SARDA. A WHOLE ISLAND ON SHOW 15 - 18 MAY
Over a century has passed since 1899, when the first “Cavalcata Sarda” was organized to honour the visit of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita, but still today the event never fails to enthrall. On the second-last Sunday of May, hundreds of horsemen and horsewomen from every part of Sardinia set off for Sassari to
gather at the annual unmissable meeting: over 3,000 people, all wearing traditional costumes, take part in one of the most lavish and amazing parades of the island.
A living repertoire of different multicoloured costumes embellished with jewels and amulets—amazes present-day onlookers as it did with the travellers who journeyed through Sardinia in the nineteenth century.
Sardinian rites, traditions and colours evoke emotions conveyed by a fascinating, complex and mysterious culture, rich in «insights into Greek and pre-Hellenic / Egyptian and Assyro-Babylonian / Arabian, Phoenician, Aragonese / and, most of all, Roman and Christian life as well as Sardinian» as Giuseppe Biasi, the greatest painter of Sardinian modernity, wrote.
