The Flag of Sardinia and Tenore Sardinian Restaurant

The Sardinian flag as adopted in its present form only 10 years ago. It features a thin red cross on a white background — with the severed head of a Moor displayed in each of the quarterings.
These days the Moors face right and they each have a bandage around their forehead, rather like a do-rag. Before 1999, however, the heads faced left and the bandage covered their eyes —because what the flag symbolises is the defeat and execution of Moorish kings after the reconquest of the island in the 11th century.
Tenore Sardinian Restaurant in Barnsbury Road London N1 display the flag of Sardinia proudly, with two whopping ones draped over the front window and another flying inside over the bar. Sardinian brothers Alessandro and Dario Mele, who have worked in London restaurants for 10 years, opened Tenore earlier this year with, as chef, Roberto Tonzanu, formerly of Passione, where he worked alongside Geraldo Contaldo.
They aim to deliver a full 'taste of Sardinia', if that’s what you fancy, but it’s not compulsory. There is a dual menu, offering mainstream Italian dishes before the Sardinian specials, as well as a long list of pizzas from the wood-fired oven, ranging from a Margherita at £6.80 to assorted versions made with buffalo mozzarella at £10.75. Tenore offers an intriguing list of Sardinian wines, many based on unfamiliar grapes. The house wines come from the Cantina di Dorgali on the east coast of the island and are good value at £13.75 a bottle, £3.75 a glass — the rich red “cannonau” being in fact what is called garnacha in Spain grenache in France.

Fascinating Sardinian Orchids

"Orchid hunting can be arduous in many places but in the mountains of Sardinia 'Ophrys' orchids grow like roadside weeds! When they bloom in April you can spot them from a moving car. Close up, the lower lip, or labellum, of these diminutive orchids bears an uncanny resemblance to a female bee as viewed from behind. This pseudobee, which is some Orphrys species come complete with fake fur and what appear to be elbows and folded iridescent wings, look as through she has her head buried in a green flower formed by the actual flower's sepals. To reinforce the deception, the orchid gives off a scent that has been shown to closely match the pheromones of the female bee.

On the island of Sardinia, the flowers of mirror orchids perfectly mimic the reflection of blue ski on a female wasp's wings. Male wasps, beguiled by the flower's sight and scent, are lured into service carrying pollen from plant to plant." Click here for picture.

Excerpts from National Geographic Magazine Sept 2009 entitled Sneaky Orchids by Michael Pollan.

Driving to Sardinia

More and more people are asking how to avoid flying to Sardinia, while the low-cost airlines are a great cost effective option they do have there down sides.

Over the last few years Huw & Alison and the family have taken to driving to Sardinia! as well as being less stress full and no silly luggage allowance rules its great fun and a lovely way to see Europe at the same time, arriving by ship early morning on a sunny clear day is an experience not to be missed.

There are many different options, through France and Corsica, the Alps and Northern Italy you can even stop of in Pisa Florence and Rome. This year we are heading to Portsmouth to cross with LD lines to Le Havre and then driving tp Beaune staying the night in a wonderful Auberge, where I’m sure we will have a wonderful dinner and a glass of rose, the next day we’ll head up to the Alps Via Chamonix and Mont Blanc, pass through the tunnel and arrive in Courmayeur for an Italian Lunch high up in Zerrotta in Val Veny right under Monti Bianca, after lunch its just a couple of hours drive to Genoa for a late overnight crossing to Olbia in Sardinia. Just Sardinia can arrange all aspects of a trip like this and give first hand recommendations

Cycle Sardinia

Simon Rickard, one of the 5 intrepid cyclists who rode to and from Sardinia during the “Cycle to Sardinia” Charity trip, will return to Sardinia next week with his bike….but this time he’s not cycling there!

Simon was pivotal in raising over £28,000 pounds for the Poole Hospital Neo-Natal unit in Dorset. The cycle trip was a great success and just last week Simon told me that a work colleague of his had thanked him for all his efforts. Simon asked why he was thanking him again, and was told that his wife had just given birth to a baby at 27 weeks and the baby was taken to the Neo-Natal unit and nursed on one of the cots that has been purchased from the money that “Cycle to Sardinia” had raised. (All the cots have a plaque on the side of them).

Cycling is environmentally friendly, good for fitness and enables you to get a real taste and feel of the island, to meet the local people, stay in family run accommodation and to get off the beaten track and experience the real Sardinia by bike...

“We are delighted to have worked with ITV to promote Sardinia as the number 1 holiday destination in the Mediterranean” said Huw Nurse, MD of Just Sardinia.

Yet being the second largest Mediterranean island, it has so much more to offer with an interesting history, wild mountainous interior, vibrant towns with local traditions, colourful festivals. Anyone for Tennis in Sardina?!

"The Forte Village resort in Sardinia makes for an elegant place to practice your tennis - or just relax by the pool" says Janet Street-Porter in the Daily Mail who visited 'sensational Sardinia' to brush up on her strokes, before Wimbledon commences, with Roger Taylor who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals three times in the late Sixties and early Seventies.

She went to Forte Village on Sardinia, where there's a huge tennis complex (as well as football coaching) and to sample the world-famous spa, with its sea water and mineral hot baths (great for soothing aching joints and torn muscles and tendons). The resort, a series of beautifully landscaped bungalows and hotels on a pretty sandy beach, was opened by Charles Forte in 1970, especially to cater to families and sports-orientated guests. There are loads of activities from dawn to dusk for children, and dozens of restaurants and shops.
"The best thing about the resort is that you can be completely private - my room had a little garden, a terrace to lounge on, and they brought tea and fresh fruit, unasked, every day. That's what I call service". It's just 45 minutes from Cagliari, framed by mountains, and extends over hundreds of acres down a gentle slope from the road to the sea. Once you've checked in, you're whisked to your room in an electric buggy. Cars are banned and there are plentiful racks of bikes for children and adults (extra cost).

New Chef at Il Pescatore Ristorante in Porto Cervo

The Cervo Hotel, part of Starwood’s Costa Smeralda Resorts, announces new Chef Luca Depalo at the hotel’s premier restaurant Il Pescatore. This rustically elegant restaurant specializes in fish and seafood dishes with a waterfront terrace and stunning panoramic views of the village of Porto Cervo and luxurious yachts moored on the bay.

Italian-born Chef Luca Depalo has worked at various successful international restaurants, most recently at Numero in Manchester, England and has studied at the renowned Hotel Institute in Locarno, Switzerland. At Il Pescatore, his focus will be on seasonal and locovore cooking that celebrates Sardinia’s cuisine, Mediterranean influences, utilizing regional produce and ingredients. Guests can experience dishes that tell the Island’s story through its flavors and proud culinary tradition.“We have introduced several typical recipes that aim to authentically present Sardinia’s cuisine to our guests,” explains Maurizio Immacolato, Food & Beverage Manager of the Cervo Complex that manages the Il Pescatore restaurant. “Our discerning international clientele desire to experience Sardinia’s natural beauty but also discover island culture through the its unique flavors.”

Il Pescatore translates to “The Fisher” and the cuisine is wholly reflected in the name. Among others, the following are few enticing new menu items: fresh prawns, green apples and grapefruit salad; tagliolini pasta with prawns and almond pesto; and frog fish filet with flavored mashed potatoes and ricotta cheese pie with pineapple and ginger sauce. The Cervo Hotel and Il Pescatore are located in the heart of the Porto Cervo, steps away from designer boutiques, nightlife and cultural attractions. From May until the end of September, the restaurant is open every day for dinner from 8:00pm to 11:00pm and can be found crossing the charming wooden bridge that connects the Piazzetta with the Old Harbour.

The luxury Sheraton Cervo Hotel completed renovations in 2008 including the new Presidential and Royal Suites that each feature two bedrooms, private wine cellar, spacious living rooms, and Jacuzzi, in addition to a new hotel gym and bar in the swimming pool area. Overlooking the famous Piazzetta, the hotel is close to the most renowned designer shops, jewelers, boutiques and nightlife. The 96 freshly decorated guest rooms and suites are done in typical Sardinian style and fitted with refined Sardinian handcrafts. The Cervo Hotel also offers one outdoor heated fresh-water swimming pool, another large outdoor pool by the Tennis Club and a heated fresh water indoor-pool.

Sartiglia Horse Event in Sardinia on Sky

At the end of February, Mark Jennings from http://www.chillipeppertv.com/ (from the Just Sardinia TV/Travel Guru film shoot) went to Sardinia to film the ‘Sa Sartiglia’ festival in Oristano – the most spectacular and choreographed carnival in Sardinia! It is an equestrian event with ancient origins in which brave horsemen compete in a centuries-old celebration as participants in traditional Sardinian and Spanish costume perform amazing stunts on horseback and drive the horses at full gallop to pierce a suspended star in the ‘sartiglia’ (ring). The more holes are made in the star, the luckier the year ahead will be. (The horse racing picture we use in the brochure and on the website is of this event.)
Just Sardinia helped Mark to get assistance with the filming from the Oristano Tourist Board . You can watch on Sky Sports at the following times and it is also going to be on BBC world and CNBC Europe and in FEI Equestrian World magazine.
Monday May 4th at 8pm on Sky Sports Xtra 30 mins (The latest equestrian news.)

Sardinian Luxury Yacht Tax Scrapped

A tax on luxury yachts mooring in the waters of Sardinia and private jets landing at its airports is to be repealed by the Mediterranean island.

Sardinia's new governor, who is the son of Silvio Berlusconi's tax adviser, is to scrap a tax on super yachts as one of his first acts in office.
Ugo Cappellacci will also repeal a tax on private aircraft touching down on the island, which had cost jetsetters such as Mr Berlusconi, who owns a large villa on Sardinia, up to £690 a time.

Mr Cappellacci is also expected to loosen restrictions on construction along Sardinia's rugged coastline.
The luxury yacht tax, which critics said scared away super-rich boat owners, was introduced in 2006 by Sardinia's previous centre-left governor, Renato Soru, who was ousted in elections last month.
He had argued that revenue from the tax helped boost the island's economy and contributed to conserving its natural beauty.
Sardinia is a summer playground for the world's rich and famous, particularly along its famed Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast.
The tax currently applies to all yachts longer than 46ft. The owners of mega-yachts reaching 200ft in length were being charged up to US$20,000 for the privilege of spending the summer in a Sardinian port.
Even boat owners visiting the island for just a day were required to pay the tax.
The fees were up to 50 times higher than those of equivalent yachting destinations such as Croatia, Greece and Sardinia's northern neighbour, Corsica.
Mr Berlusconi plucked Mr Cappellacci from virtual obscurity to contest the Sardinian election.
